A perfect day in Prague

After a whirlwind of a three months in Prague as a Turing Scheme Participant with Capacity UK, this would be my recommended ideal day, combining all my favourite parts of Prague together!

Firstly, head to Café Flat for Breakfast, which is only a two-minute walk from our apartment, This café serves up some great cakes, bakes and brunches. We get the blueberry and caramel nuts pancakes which are amazing (the portion sizes are generous too). They also serve up many savoury options which look great! If you’re feeling fancy, they do some amazing cocktails and adult hot chocolate too (with Kahlua in it) Why not?

With full bellies, head to the Ruska tram stop which is just opposite Café Flat. You can be in the centre in less than 30 minutes from here. Public transport is great in Prague (bus, tram and metro). In the centre you will find the famous Dancing House, Franz Kafka’s Rotating Head as well as lots of shops, galleries, museums and theatres. Even in peak season, Prague isn’t the busiest of cities which makes taking in the sites all the more relaxing. There are also several parks and green spaces scattered around the city, some of which have cafes and bars too like Letna Park. There’s something to do whatever the weather!

You can’t visit Prague without crossing the famous Charles Bridge. With its rich history, there are often little stalls and buskers scattered along. Once you weave through the vibrant crowds, you’ll reach Mala Strana, this area is very pretty. This area is filled with souvenir shops, bars as well as traditional Trdelnik shops (a sort of churro roll, often served with ice cream inside – they are delicious and well worth a try even if your fingers begin to freeze in the cold).

Time to head to the Castle, trust me it’s worth the 100s of steps to the top – the views are amazing. You can see Zizkov Tower from up there! Make sure you save enough time to get there before the Castles Cathedral closes at 3:45pm. There’s no need to pay for tickets, you can see most of the architecture and some interiors for free. Once you’ve soaked up the history of the grounds, just a short walk away is Petrin Tower. You do need to pay a small amount to go up it but by this time of day is perfect because you get to see the sunset and watch all the city lights turn on.

You will have worked up an appetite by this time so head back down the hill towards the Castle where you will find our favourite Czech resturant: U Dvou Sluncu. Here you can try traditional Pork Knee, Smazeny-syr (fried cheese and chips) and Goulash amongst many other delicious foods. The beers are cheap too. If you want to continue the party, get the tram into town and head to Bar 23. This is our favourite bar because the cocktails are amazing (Frozen Mango Daquiri – Yes please) and also very cheap. There are many pubs and bars in this area with most of the clubs just a short walk away – Enjoy!
